Welcome to the School Counseling Department

Our goal is to provide each and every student with comprehensive guidance and counseling that reflects their individual needs, supporting students to achieve their academic and personal goals. Throughout the year, counselors meet with students individually, in small groups and in the classroom to assist with:

Academic advising including course selection, scheduling, and academic support
Social and emotional counseling including peer relationships, stress management, conflict resolution and crisis intervention
Career exploration using tools on Naviance as well as community resources
Post-secondary planning, beginning with the initial search through the application and acceptance process

Counseling Curriculum Overview

Each incoming freshman class is divided alphabetically into five groups, with each group assigned to a counselor. Counselors work directly with that group of students from the beginning of their freshman year through graduation.

When will I find out my counselor team assignment?

How will the counseling teams work together?

The new model will include a dedicated ninth grade counselor and a team of two counselors (one School Counselor and one College and Career Counselor) for students in Grades 10-12. Each counseling team will follow their caseload based on alphabet bands through the progression of high school and provide a comprehensive level of academic, personal and post-secondary support.

What will be different with the new counseling structure and program?

Counselors will have specific areas of focus and delineation of roles. The freshman counselor will support students as they transition to high school with grade level specific programming throughout the course of their freshman year. Students in Grades 10-12 will be assigned to a counseling team consisting of two counselors, a school counselor and a college/career counselor. School Counselors will focus on academic planning and the social emotional needs of students. College and Career Counselors will focus on supporting students with post-secondary planning. The specialization model within the Counseling Department at Radnor High School will allow all students to be provided with a comprehensive level of support throughout their educational experience.

What is the breakdown of roles between the School Counselor and College and Career Counselors?

Where can I find information about the counseling department and program?

You can find information about the counseling department on the Radnor High School website. Additionally, starting in the fall of 2023, the Counseling Department will have dedicated Schoology pages for each grade level where students and parents can view information, activities, instructional videos, and related events. Counseling related programming (i.e. evening events) will continue to be shared via the Radnor Reader, School Messenger and posted to the Website.

What will be covered in the College and Career Transition Prep class?

The CCTP course guides students throughout their college and career journey. Students will gain an understanding of the skills necessary for developing future career paths and applying to post-secondary institutions (college, vocational, military, etc.). All topics are geared to ensure access to a viable and challenging instructional experience that better prepares students for the career and college selection process including, but not limited to: resume building, college essay writing, securing letters of recommendation, NCAA eligibility, finding internships/relevant work experiences, Gap Year considerations, and interview skills. In addition, students receive instruction in proven standardized test taking strategies through programs such as Khan Academy. CCTP will culminate with a digital portfolio for use with the post-secondary transition.

Freshman Year

Freshman guidance will include an orientation to the High School, introduction to the HS Hope program, small group meetings and individual meetings as needed. An evening program will also be available for freshman parents in January covering the transition to high school and the resources and supports available to students at the High School. Counselors also teach guidance lessons quarterly in 9th grade health classes. These lessons include small group introductions, PSAT review and course selection overview, an introduction to Naviance, our college and career planning resource, and our first career inventory. Freshman will also take the PSAT's in October.

Sophomore Year

Junior Year

Counselors will host a Junior College Planning program for parents and students at the beginning of December. Admissions representatives from local colleges will present workshops on a variety of topics, including choosing the right college, what happens in the admissions process, and essay writing. Counselors will meet with parents and students individually to review the college search and application process. Students will take PSAT's. Students should also register to take the ACT's, SAT's and any SAT II subject tests that may be required by potential college choices.

Senior Year

Counselors will host a Senior College Application Evening program for seniors and their parents at the beginning of September. We will review all of the pieces of the application process and answer any questions that students and parents may have. Counselors will also meet with all seniors during the first month of the school year to review their individual post-secondary plan. Counselors will continue to be available to seniors throughout the school year to answer questions and provide support as they make decisions about their post-High School plans.

Ongoing

Personal counseling, academic counseling, career/major consultation, maintain accuracy of student records/graduation requirements, resource to parents, collaboration with administration and teachers, academic monitoring through report cards, course selection, participate in faculty and department meetings, website updates and newsletters, HS Hope referrals, professional development, and new student registration.

The School Counseling Department hosts monthly virtual meetings for prospective students and parents who do not currently attend RTSD schools. They take place December through April, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
